Highlights of Life in Ypsilanti

A spirited college town

It's not uncommon to see college-aged students clad in green and white strolling through the streets of historic downtown Ypsilanti—these are Eastern Michigan University students! With more than 22,000 students enrolled, EMU's campus has become a vital part of Ypsi's overall community. The university's students have greatly contributed to the city's fresh arts scene, and they can often be found supporting small businesses and, of course, cheering on the Eagles at sporting events!

Prized shopping

If want to show off your Ypsilanti swag, then you have to stock up on the Ypsi merch at Brick & Mortar Modern General Store. Here, you can soak up the sweet nostalgia of old fashioned candy and thoughtfully curated home goods, with the added bonus of knowing that 90% of the store's items are handmade by local talent. Depot Town features a collection of distinct shops, including Jim MacDonald's & Apple Annie's Antiques. Just as lengthy as its name, this antique store boasts an extensive lineup of vintage jewelry and one-of-a-kind finds.

Annual events

An exceedingly bright spot on Ypsilanti's event calendar, ypsiGLOW is essentially a citywide dance party, with some of the wildest and most impressive costumes you can imagine. This parade and dance party duo event features art installations and luminary creations crafted by Ypsi residents themselves. Serving as yet another opportunity to put Ypsi's local talent on display, First Fridays Ypsilanti is a monthly art and culture walk, featuring a variety of art forms, live music, and plenty of food vendors. And if you really want to live like a Ypsi local, then you have to attend YpsiFest—this three-day community event celebrates Ypsilanti heritage and all the things that continue to make the city so lovable today!

Quality schools

It's no surprise that Eastern Michigan University dominates the post-secondary education scene in Ypsilanti, yet there are many specialty schools throughout the area that are worth checking out, too. ACTech High School is a reputable institution, particularly for its curriculum focused on fine arts and humanities. This high school's curriculum is designed to expose students to a more collegiate experience, with research projects and educational workshops added into students' day-to-day learning.
